The 2013 Marching Dutch season came to an end the night of Oct. 19 as they marched their last competitive marching performance at Ankeny.
“The 2013 fall show was entitled On Air andcentered on man’s wonder and pursuit of flight. It utilized several audio clip quotes and poems about flight that were played while the band performed. Music for this year’s show included: “Tapestry of Nations” from the Disney Millennium Celebration, “1000 Airplanes on the Roof”, and “To Tame the Perilous Skies.” The 2013 show was also dedicated to the memory and celebration of the life of Blake Van Vark,” – said Pentico
•The Marching Dutch had a very successful season. In their first competition “The Marching Dutch Invitational,”since the Dutch were the hosts of the event, they couldn’t compete. They marched an exhibition performance.
•The next competition was the Urbandale Marching Invitational. The Dutch had a great performance there and took first place in Class 3A. They also received caption awards for Best Percussion and Best Color Guard.
•After Urbandale, the Dutch had the next week to rehearse for Valley Fest. Some say that Valley is the most important competition of the year due to the number of bands there and the number of people who attend. The Dutch took home first place in Class 3A and caption awards for the Best Marching, Best Music, Best Percussion and Best Color Guard.
•The final day of competitions, the Dutch performed in Pella for the state contest receiving their 39th Consecutive “I” rating. Following that, they headed off to Ankeny for the “Mid Iowa Band Championships.” The Dutch had a great performance and took home 1st place in Class 3A as well as first place overall.
