As the regular season is winding down, both the Pella boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams are finishing strong. The girls have won seven out of eight including an impressive come from behind win against Dallas Center Grimes on Tuesday, February 5. The Lady Dutch’s postseason outlook looks great, sitting one game away from State. Their next game is a rematch against Grinnell. The game will be a tough one, especially considering the Lady Dutch haven’t defeated Grinnell since 2016.
Regarding the game against Grinnell, senior Grace Held said, “I’m excited to have another opportunity to play them because they present a ton of challenges that are fun to compete against.”
The boys are looking much better after a short regression following Winter Break. The Dutch have won four of five, including a beatdown of Oskaloosa. Similarly to the Girls, the Boys’ postseason chances look incredible with one of their biggest challenges being Ballard, a solid team they have already defeated once this season.
Going into the postseason senior Nick Dejong said, “I feel very strongly that we are going in with a good chance to go pretty far. Our team chemistry is at an all-time high.”
The Dutch have enough talent to beat anyone in the state and when they play at there best they have beaten a full strength Osky team and Norwalk. If the boys can play at the level they reached earlier in the season throughout the postseason, they have a great chance of winning a state championship. If they play as they did following Winter Break, they won’t even make State, the decision is theirs.
