Senior Colin Kerndt has endured many battles throughout his high school football career. Through these challenges, he has learned many valuable lessons and is now ready to put what he has learned into action as he plays his final season for the Dutch.
Kerndt was pulled up to varsity sophomore year. Despite having played quarterback throughout his career, he successfully transitioned to starting corner and backup receiver.
“The biggest adversity I had to overcome was breaking my arm during my sophomore year,” Kerndt recalls. “It was the first game, and I went in to make a tackle and ended up with a broken arm. I also had to play through a torn labrum my junior year.”
Kerndt believes that his faith and positive attitude, along with hard work, helped him get through these painful experiences and have taught Kerndt what truly matters during tough times.
“I believe discipline is the most important quality,” said Kerndt. “No one cares about your goals or is going to hold you accountable besides yourself. You have to stay consistent even when you don’t feel like it if you really want to reach your goals.”
Football has also taught Kerndt the importance of teamwork.
“Football taught me how crucial it is to work as a team. It’s the ultimate team sport where all 11 players on the field need to work together to accomplish their goals,” said Kerdt. “This translates to real life, where working well with others is important in many aspects.”
While teamwork is important, Kerndt believes that paying attention to the small details helps an athlete gain an edge over his competition. He makes sure to go beyond what is required at practices, which includes lifting, stretching every night, watching film, and focusing on proper nutrition and hydration.
“Football means a lot to me,” Kerndt concluded. “It has impacted my life in many ways. I have built great relationships with teammates, learned many life lessons, and made countless great memories.”
