On track to a state title, Pella boys track and field

The boys’ track and field team were originally planning on winning a state championship last May, but sadly due to Covid-19, the season was cut short. The plan is still in motion, and the boys never lost any momentum.  They are ranked #1 in 3A again and have their eyes on the title.

“I think that it’s too bad we lost last season, but it also gives the guys a good mindset to get work done this year,” said junior Nolan Clayberg,

Clayberg also wants to win a state title in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay with his fellow teammates Gage Hyser, Brandon Winegarder, Josh Warner, and Izaak LaHue. Currently, they hold the fastest time in Class 3A in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay with a time of 1:00.72 seconds.

“I want to try to become a positive leader and show the team how enjoyable the track is since there wasn’t a season last year,” said senior Tony Schmitz. “I want to try to become a positive leader and show the team how enjoyable the track is since there wasn’t a season last year.”

“Our biggest strength is our depth; we have a lot of quality guys in each event and many are very versatile,” said Schmitz. The boys’ track team has over 60 members.

Schmitz’s goals for this season are to win the 800m, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay state titles. His 4x400m relay team is ranked #1 in Class 3A.  The relay team consists of Jackson Rozenboom, Kenson Fuller, and Karl Miller. They hold the best time in Class 3A with a time of 3:26.87 seconds; the 4x800m relay team is currently ranked #1 with a time of 8:11.51 formed by Josiah Wittenberg, Trey Van Hauen, and Chase Lauman.

Both Clayberg and Schmitz’s main goal is to win a state championship as a team.  According to Clayberg, the team is more of a brotherhood than a team.

Clayberg states, “The thing our team has over all other teams is how genuinely excited our guys get for each other before, during, and after races.”
