PHS Prepares for First Annual Showcase

Pella High’s choir, orchestra, Jazz 1, and Jazz 2 will host its first annual showcase. In the past, the choir department performed at Cabaret and the two jazz bands at Carnaby club. Now, the two are being combined. Principal Eric Nelson originally came up with the idea.

““It came about that being able to showcase all programs together in a singular event was going to be significant to our school. We have such a high number of kids involved in band, vocal, and orchestra that we were having kids make too big a committee of two weekends. This would incorporate and only include one weekend. You also have to consider the disruptions to the educational environment for one weekend versus two weekends,” said Nelson.

Orchestra director Katherine Bendon commented on the pros and cons of this decision.

“Students are only occupied one weekend instead of two and people get to hear a representation of the whole music department in one event. With any new event, there are a lot of unknowns and extra time spent planning. It is also a challenge to provide opportunities for all students to show what they can do without making the show super long.”

The event will be held Friday April 28 at 7 p.m. and Saturday April 29 at 2 and 7 p.m. Every year, the showcase will take place the last week of April before Tulip Time. The jazz bands, choir, and orchestra will perform music they have been working on during the semester for concerts and competitions. Band, choir, and orchestra members can perform solos which they will have to practice and prepare outside of regular band, choir, or orchestra time.

While there will also be ensembles, the combination of all music departments has decreased the amount.  Both the gym and commons area will be used for the event. However, setting up and tearing down will be easier as there are more students.

Sophomore Annaleigh Babcock believes this is a good opportunity for all the departments.

“It will be a good chance for choir kids and band kids to mingle, and it will hopefully bring together the best aspects of both shows into one.”
