Here at Pella High, there are many opportunities to get involved in the arts. One specific way to be involved is by taking art classes. There are three mediums offered: Drawing, Painting, and Ceramics, which compete in the Little Hawkeye Art Show. Specifically, there is a strong art program with art classes taught by first-year teacher Taylor Eilander after Julie Stratton retired last year.
In Eilander’s first year, students noticed a transition. Specifically, sophomore Reid Svenby shares a difference he has noticed in the art program.
“Their styles are very different. Miss Stratton, she really liked realism, and more realistic forms. Miss Eilander enjoys creativity a little more.”
There are also many programs offered that allow students to express themselves.
Teacher Taylor Eilander says, “I value freedom. I want students to make artwork that they like. I say that quite a bit. I like for them to have their own choices and make art that individually appeals to them.”
With the creativity outlined by Reid Svenby, it can be viewed that the art program is appreciated by artistic students like senior McKenna Salvador who has taken seven art classes at Pella High.
“I think it’s a way to help keep kids coming to school,” said Salvador. “I wouldn’t enjoy school as much and I wouldn’t come to school as much if I didn’t have an art class. They’re more fun than other classes are.”
Pella High students are given a variety of opportunities that range from sports to things like art classes. “I think art classes are fun and I think everyone should take an art class,” says sophomore Reid Svenby.
